emsagent(1M)emsagent(1M)NAMEemsagent - SNMP subAgent that services Event Monitoring Services Noti‐
fication.
SYNOPSISemsagentDESCRIPTIONemsagent is a subAgent that is attached to the SNMP Master Agent (snm‐
pdm). The emsagent provides the trap notification for the Event Moni‐
toring Services. The emsagent is a separate process. The SNMP Master
Agent binds loosely to the emsagent.
Traps
The emsagent sends information to a management station without an
explicit request from it. Such an operation is called a "trap." By
default, SNMP traps are not sent to any destination. To configure the
agent to send traps to one or more specific destinations, add the trap
destinations to /etc/SnmpAgent.d/snmpd.conf.
The SNMP Master Agent and the emsagent collaborate to send EMS event
traps. For example, a trap is sent when the disk being monitored
fails. A complete list of all the EMS-related traps can be found on
systems with OpenView and ClusterView installed. On an OpenView man‐
agement station, the trap descriptions can be found in
/usr/OV/conf/$LANG/cvtrapd.conf (or /usr/OV/conf/$LANG/trapd.conf)
(9.X), or /etc/opt/OV/share/conf/$LANG/cvtrapd.conf (or
/etc/opt/OV/share/conf/$LANG/trapd.conf) (10.X).
emsagent Startup
Startup is controlled by the setting of the AUTOSTART_EMSAGT variable
in the /etc/rc.config.d/emsagtconf file. If AUTOSTART_EMSAGT is set to
1, the emsagent is started automatically each time the system boots.
If configured for autostart, the emsagent should startup automatically,
after the SNMP Master Agent starts, each time the system reboots, or
anytime the system transitions from run level 1 to run level 2. When
the system enters run level 2, the system will execute
/sbin/init.d/SnmpMaster which will start the Master Agent. Similarly,
/sbin/init.d/emsagent will start the emsagent immediately after the
Master Agent is started.
Prior to executing these startup scripts the system will examine all
scripts in /etc/rc.config.d for environment variables which could
potentially influence the startup of the Master Agent and the emsagent.
See the specific startup script or configuration file for details on
supported environment variables. The user should never modify scripts
in /sbin/init.d. Instead, the startup behavior should be controlled by
adjusting values in the configuration script /etc/rc.config.d/emsagt‐
conf.
There are two ways to start the SNMP Master Agent and the emsagent man‐
ually. The first way is to execute snmpdm and then start emsagent by
invoking the emsagent executable (/etc/opt/resmon/lbin/emsagent).
The second and simplest way to start the SNMP Agent manually is to exe‐
cute the snmpd startup script which will invoke the Master Agent and
all subAgents who have been installed and designed to operate in this
paradigm. The snmpd startup script is layered upon the V.4 startup
paradigm and so makes use of the component startup scripts in
/sbin/init.d and configuration scripts in /etc/rc.config.d. When snmpd
is invoked it passes all its command line arguments to snmpdm and then
executes each script found in /sbin/SnmpAgtStart.d.

EXTERNAL INFLUENCES
Environment Variables
LANG determines the language in which messages appear. If LANG is not
specified or is set to the empty string, a default of "C" (see lang(5)
is used instead of LANG. If any internationalization variable contains
an invalid setting, emsagent behaves as if all internationalization
variables are set to "C." See environ(5).
International Code Set Support
Supports 8-bit and 16-bit character code sets.
