ifatmconfig(1M)ifatmconfig(1M)NAMEifatmconfig - configure parameters for ATM logical TCP/IP interfaces
SYNOPSISifatmconfig interface [ parameters ]
ifatmconfig-F configfile
DESCRIPTIONifatmconfig sets parameters for RFC 1577 Logical IP Subnetworks (LISs).
Each ATM LIS appears as a logical network interface that can be given an
IP address and configured 'up' or 'down' with ifconfig(1m) just like
other conventional network devices. ifatmconfig is used to configure
additional LIS parameters that are specific to ATM logical networks.
The following are the parameters set by ifatmconfig:
port n The port parameter is the physical ATM port that the LIS
uses. Each LIS must be bound to a specific ATM port
before the logical interface is brought up. Note that
multiple LISs can use a single ATM port but each LIS can
only communicate through a single port.
iftype type Each ATM interface can be configured to use either UNI or
SPANS (Simple Protocol for ATM Network Signaling), but not
both. SPANS is a signaling protocol that was designed at
FORE Systems prior to the existance of standard ATM
signaling protocols. SPANS is only available on the
Origin and Onyx2 platforms, and therefore this parameter
can be specfied on only Origin/Onyx2 platforms. The
signaling used by an interface is controled by the
interface type. The type can be set to either 'atm' or
'spans'. A type of atm configures the interface to use UNI
signaling and Classic IP. A type of spans configures the
interface to use SPANS signaling and Fore IP.
arpserver addr The arpserver parameter is the ATM address of the ARP
server designated for the LIS. The ARP server for an LIS
must be specified before the logical interface is brought
up. If the ARP server address is the same as the ATM
address of the port to which the LIS is bound, the host
will function as ARP server for that LIS.
vcrate bps The vcrate parameter is the peak bit rate (ATM cell
payload) specified for transmission on virtual circuits
created for the LIS. The (ATM Forum UNI 3.0/3.1) traffic
parameter for switched virtual circuits created for the
LIS will be BEST-EFFORT with a peak cell rate (CLP=0+1) of
bps / 384.
vctimeout m The vctimeout parameter is the maximum minutes of
inactivity for dynamically created virtual circuits. If a
dynamically created virtual circuit on the specified LIS

is inactive (no traffic sent or received) for m minutes,
the virtual circuit is torn down. The default value for
this is twenty minutes. The resolution of the inactivity
timer is two minutes.
hwloop state Output packets that are addressed to an ATM interface's IP
address are normally not sent down to the hardware, but
instead, sent through the loopback (lo0) interface. This
parameter allows this behavior to be controlled. By
utilizing the hwloop parameter, output packets that would
normally be sent to the loopback (lo0) interface, can be
sent down to the actual hardware driver. Setting the state
to on causes all output packets to be sent to the hardware
driver. Setting the state to off (normal and default mode)
causes all output packets destined for the ATM interface's
IP address to be sent to the loopback (lo0) driver. This
option is intended for troubleshooting and diagnostic
purposes only and should be used with extreme caution.
The above parameters can be set either by using ifatmconfig on command
line or by placing the parameters in a configuration file and using the
-F option of ifatmconfig. Typically, the -F option is only used by the
ATM start-up script to read LIS parameters from /var/atm/ifatm.conf at
system power-up.
ifatmconfig displays the ATM address and all the current parameters for a
logical network interface when no optional parameters are supplied.
EXAMPLES
Show all the parameters for an LIS:
ifatmconfig atm0
Set the ARP server for LIS atm1 (one line):
ifatmconfig atm1 arpserver \
0x47.0005.80.ffe100.0000.f21a.024f.0020481a024f.00
Set the inactivity time-out value for atm2 to 5 minutes:
ifatmconfig atm2 vctimeout 5
Enable hardware loopback on atm1:
ifatmconfig atm1 hwloop on
Set atm3 to use SPANS signaling:
ifatmconfig atm3 iftype spans
