TRB(4) BSD Programmer's Manual TRB(4)NAMEtrb - 3Com 3C359 TokenLink Velocity XL PCI token ring adapters
SYNOPSIS
trb* at pci?
DESCRIPTION
The trb interface provides access to a 4 Mb/s or 16 Mb/s token ring (IEEE
802.5) network.
Before the adapter can be configured, its microcode must be loaded using
the trbsetup(8) utility. It is safe to load the microcode even if it has
already been loaded, although the interface must be down for the load to
succeed.
The adapter attempts to insert itself into the token ring when ifconfig
marks it as up. Ring insertion typically takes around 3 seconds. If in-
sertion fails or if a problem occurs while inserted, the adapter may re-
move itself from the ring and initiate error recovery. A time delay
(which increases with each failure) is imposed before each retry. If the
network administrator sends a message to the adapter requesting it remove
itself, it will not retry insertion.
MEDIA SELECTION
Media related features are set via ifconfig(8). Note that media parame-
ters can only be changed if the adapter is not inserted in the ring. The
ifconfig(8) command is used to configure IP source route bridging, all
rings broadcast, and using broadcast or functional MAC address for multi-
cast packets.
DIAGNOSTICS
There are numerous diagnostics for providing status or reporting on hard-
ware or configuration errors. The most common ones are listed below:
trb%d: microcode not loaded
The adapter microcode must be loaded (by the trbsetup program).
trb%d: inserted in ring
The adapter has successfully inserted itself into the token ring.
trb%d: insertion retry in %d seconds
This message is issued during error recovery when the adapter failed to
insert itself into the ring or was removed and a retry has been sched-
uled. It indicates that ring insertion will be retried after the speci-
fied time period.
SEE ALSOintro(4), arp(4), inet(4), ifconfig(8), trbsetup(8)BUGS
The driver currently supports the TKP protocol. The TXI protocol is not
supported at this time.
Note that the adapter hardware does not differentiate between UTP and STP
medi a.
The 3C359 is configured by the ifconfig command and does not use the set-
tings as provided by the DOS setup utility.
Lobe cable failure detection isn't perfect on the 3C359, but the card
will recover from these error conditions (it may take a while however).
HISTORY
The trb driver first appeared in BSD/OS 4.0.1.
